My New Year’s Resolution

December 31, 2024

Each year, my husband and I pick something new to do – in 2024, we watched 24 movies neither of us had seen, and in 2022, we ate 22 new fruits and vegetables. But in 2025, we’re doing something more altruistic – we’re each committing to volunteering 25 hours for organizations or causes aligned with our values.

Volunteering was his idea, and with all  the chaos in our nation and world, this New Year’s resolution is a way to help our community while feeling less helpless about policies beyond our control. Volunteering is not  new to me – for three tax filing seasons, I was a Volunteer Income Tax Assister, helping working people file their taxes. I served on the board of 501 Commons, Seattle Japanese American Citizens’ League, and I still serve on the board of the Washington State Community Action Partnership.

In 2024, I had the opportunity to participate in our Vietnamese support group and volunteer recognition ceremony. I was struck by how dozens of Vietnamese seniors took public transportation to Yesler Terrace for the opportunity to sing karaoke, ballroom dance, and share a meal. I was even more touched to learn that two former Neighborhood House staff returned each month to volunteer, even though it had been over a decade since they worked for us.

So as we approach 2025, and prepare for big changes at the federal, state, and local level, I invite you to consider small ways you can get engaged. At Neighborhood House, volunteers can secure and compile hygiene kits, organize a coat drive, or even join our Board of Directors. Click here to learn more! Wishing you a happy and engaged 2025!
