Meet Ms. Lang: Finding Hope and Connection Through PEARLS

At 75, Ms. Lang faced unimaginable challenges. She lost her husband during the COVID-19 pandemic and was diagnosed with breast cancer that metastasized to her brain. Living alone, she battled depression, fear, and anxiety, feeling overwhelmed by her circumstances.

When she joined the Program to Encourage Active, Rewarding Lives (PEARLS) program at Neighborhood House, Ms. Lang found a compassionate space where she could share her feelings and begin to heal. PEARLS educates older adults about what depression is (and is not) and helps them develop the skills they need for self-sufficiency and more active lives.  With the program’s support, she learned strategies to manage her emotions and improve her well-being. Over time, she regained her confidence and found joy in small, meaningful steps forward.

Graduating from PEARLS was a deeply emotional milestone for Ms. Lang, symbolizing her journey toward hope and strength. Today, she carries the tools and lessons from the program with her, embracing life with renewed determination.

Ms. Lang’s story is just one of over 13,000 lives transformed by Neighborhood House programs each year, thanks to the generosity of supporters like you.

Building a Future: Ngoc’s Story

When two-year-old Ngoc arrived in the U.S. with her mother and big sister this summer, their world was full of barriers. Coming from Vietnam, they faced the challenge of navigating a new system and building a life in an unfamiliar place.

In August, Ngoc’s mother enrolled her in our Early Head Start (EHS) Home Visiting program, where they met Hao Tran, one of our dedicated home visitors. Hao quickly became their guide, helping Ngoc’s mother secure health insurance, find a medical provider, and get Ngoc the speech support she needed. With Hao’s encouragement, Ngoc’s mom even earned her driver’s license in just two months—a huge step toward independence for their family.

With her new driver’s license in hand, Ngoc’s mother was able to drive the family to the Seattle Aquarium, where they enjoyed a memorable outing using complimentary tickets. Her excitement was a beautiful reminder of how far they have come.

Today, with the assistance of Neighborhood House’s home visiting program and Hao’s compassionate care, Ngoc’s family is thriving.

Jose’s Path to Employment and Education

Jose, an 18-year-old living in a single-parent household, turned to our Youth Advocacy Program for help with school re-engagement and employment. With our help and his determination, he obtained copies of important missing documents needed for employment, his birth certificate, social security card, and Washington State ID. Despite having his documents straightened out, he faced rejection after applying for multiple jobs. The looming threat of losing his housing due to an unstable income made his situation urgent.

Recognizing his need for support, Youth Advocate, Ana, teamed up with Career Specialist, Melvin, to guide Jose in his job search. Soon after, Jose secured an interview at Safeway. Together, they prepared him for the day by providing a mock interview, appropriate work clothing, and assistance with his food handler’s permit.

Today, Jose is successfully working as a deli clerk at Safeway, an important step toward his independence. Our next goal is to connect him with a GED program to help him achieve his educational aspirations.

Jose’s success is a powerful reminder of what’s possible with the right support. Thanks to our Youth Advocacy Program, he’s on the path to independence and a brighter future.

Piuta’s Fight for Housing Stability and Caregiving

Piuta is a single mother of three children and the primary caregiver for her disabled sister, Jayleen. As the sole wage-earner in her family, Piuta had been juggling full-time work with unpaid caregiving duties. For months, she and her children had been moving from one relative’s home to another before ultimately finding themselves living in a hotel. They were no longer able to stay with family, and Piuta reached out to Neighborhood House for help.

When Piuta contacted us, she was in need of food benefits, caregiving assistance for her sister, housing support, and medical insurance. Jayleen didn’t have the necessary documents, so our Aging and Disabilities Services (ADS) team assisted Piuta in obtaining her sister’s I-94 documents, Social Security card, and medical insurance. With Piuta being the only one working, securing stable housing for the family was a challenge.

Once Jayleen’s documents were in order, we helped Piuta complete the necessary applications. This opened doors for her to receive paid caregiving benefits for caring for her disabled sister, alleviating some of their financial burdens. This support allowed Piuta to finally secure low-income housing for her family, where her children could feel safe and stable at last.

Today, Piuta and her children have a place to call home, and she is now compensated for her role as her sister’s caregiver. Her journey exemplifies how, with the right support, families can overcome significant challenges.
