Federal Judge Blocks Medicaid Cuts for Vulnerable Washingtonians

October 1, 2026

Important Protections Preserved!

A few weeks ago, we shared that Neighborhood House had joined Northwest Health Law Advocates (NoHLA) in a lawsuit challenging federal Medicaid cuts that threatened older adults and people with disabilities in immigrant and refugee communities.

Today, we’re proud to share some good news:

A federal judge granted our request for a preliminary injunction, blocking these cuts for qualified noncitizen SSI recipients across Washington while the lawsuit moves forward.

This decision protects access to health care and long-term services for approximately 1,200 Washingtonians, including more than 150 Neighborhood House clients who were at risk of losing critical care beginning October 1.

For many of these community members, Medicaid is more than health insurance. It means access to doctors, medications, caregivers, and the support needed to remain healthy, safe, and independent. Today’s ruling means those services will continue while the courts consider the case.

Today’s ruling is proof that advocacy matters. This victory didn’t happen by accident. It reflects years of Neighborhood House advocacy alongside immigrant and refugee communities, and the power of speaking up when our neighbors are at risk.

Together with our clients and partners, Neighborhood House helped bring attention to these harmful cuts and secure meaningful protections for Washingtonians who depend on Medicaid for their health and independence. There is still more work ahead. Thousands of immigrants and refugees remain at risk of losing care, and the litigation continues. But today, we are celebrating an important victory and the power of communities coming together to fight for one another.
