Meet Ms. Lang: Finding Hope and Connection Through PEARLS

At 75, Ms. Lang faced unimaginable challenges. She lost her husband during the COVID-19 pandemic and was diagnosed with breast cancer that metastasized to her brain. Living alone, she battled depression, fear, and anxiety, feeling overwhelmed by her circumstances.

When she joined the Program to Encourage Active, Rewarding Lives (PEARLS) program at Neighborhood House, Ms. Lang found a compassionate space where she could share her feelings and begin to heal. PEARLS educates older adults about what depression is (and is not) and helps them develop the skills they need for self-sufficiency and more active lives.  With the program’s support, she learned strategies to manage her emotions and improve her well-being. Over time, she regained her confidence and found joy in small, meaningful steps forward.

Graduating from PEARLS was a deeply emotional milestone for Ms. Lang, symbolizing her journey toward hope and strength. Today, she carries the tools and lessons from the program with her, embracing life with renewed determination.

Ms. Lang’s story is just one of over 13,000 lives transformed by Neighborhood House programs each year, thanks to the generosity of supporters like you.

Building a Future: Ngoc’s Story

When two-year-old Ngoc arrived in the U.S. with her mother and big sister this summer, their world was full of barriers. Coming from Vietnam, they faced the challenge of navigating a new system and building a life in an unfamiliar place.

In August, Ngoc’s mother enrolled her in our Early Head Start (EHS) Home Visiting program, where they met Hao Tran, one of our dedicated home visitors. Hao quickly became their guide, helping Ngoc’s mother secure health insurance, find a medical provider, and get Ngoc the speech support she needed. With Hao’s encouragement, Ngoc’s mom even earned her driver’s license in just two months—a huge step toward independence for their family.

With her new driver’s license in hand, Ngoc’s mother was able to drive the family to the Seattle Aquarium, where they enjoyed a memorable outing using complimentary tickets. Her excitement was a beautiful reminder of how far they have come.

Today, with the assistance of Neighborhood House’s home visiting program and Hao’s compassionate care, Ngoc’s family is thriving.
