Message from Teachers

Hello Parents!

It is so hard to believe we are in mid-December. Some of you may be getting ready for the holiday break or having all of the school age children at home.  Neighborhood House will not be open for services from Dec. 20 through 31st.   We hope you enjoy this time staying warm and perhaps enjoying a hot drink!

We are now offering in person Home Visits in the classroom.  You and your child can come on site for your regularly scheduled home visit times instead of a virtual visit if you would like. Of course, we can always continue to meet virtually if that is what you would prefer. It has been so nice to see some of you in person. We look forward to seeing more of you.

As always, know that you and your family are important to us!

Important Dates:

NH is closed for services Dec. 20 through Dec. 31st.

Our four program-wide expectations are Be Compassionate, Be Curious, Be A Community and Be Courageous. This week we will focus on how children can Be Curious.

We are Curious when we:

  • Explore new ideas
  • Ask “I Wonder” questions
  • Imagine the possibilities
  • Test our ideas
  • Value the challenge

Language / Literacy

Activity 1

Here’s a challenging activity for kids learning their letters!

Materials:

  • Paper Towel cardboard roll
  • Markers (for writing letters)
  • Stickers

Write some letters all over the cardboard roll, then write those same letters on the stickers (picture above). Then, your child can play a game where they peel and stick the stickers on their matches!

If you don’t have stickers at home, don’t worry! You can give a marker to your child, call out a letter and/or its sound, and then have your child circle the matching letter! (The paper roll also makes for a great pretend telescope!)

Math / Science

Activity2

Be Curious and explore the math and science of cooking.

Pancakes, Pancakes!: Carle, Eric, Carle, Eric: 9780887082757: Amazon.com: Books

Here is a link to a fun story video all about making pancakes! After watching the video, perhaps your family could try the recipe – or if your family has their own fun pancake recipe, your child can help measure the ingredients to make those!

Activity 3

Harold and The Purple Crayon: Book Video – This book is about a little boy who goes on an adventure with his little purple crayon and his drawing imagination. Harold starts off in his bedroom and draws mountains, animals, a boat, a hot air balloon, a city and his own bed. After watching the video you can give your child a piece of paper and a crayon (or markers/pencils if that is what you have) and ask them what they would draw if they were able to go on an adventure. Lyrics:

Wind the bobbin up.

Wind the bobbin up.

Pull, pull, clap, clap, clap.

Wind it back again.

Wind it back again.

Pull, pull, clap, clap, clap.

Point to the ceiling.

Point to the floor.

Point to the window.

Point to the door.

Clap your hands together, 1, 2, 3.

Put your hands upon your knee.
