The Need
Right now, families in our home visiting and early learning programs are running out of diapers before the month is out. This September, the outside funding that’s supported this program is set to run out entirely, and without help, we won’t be able to keep providing diapers at all. Your gift helps close that gap before it opens.
Diapers are one of the most requested and hardest to access, basic needs among the families we serve. They aren’t covered by SNAP or WIC, and many families face real barriers just getting to a diaper bank: no transportation, multiple young children to bring along, and limited stock once they arrive.
The shelf is empty. The need isn’t.
Real needs, real families
Finding a Way
Fadumo Gutale, one of our staff members, remembers the day a home visitor called her with an urgent problem: a family she worked with was completely out of diapers.
Fadumo started reaching out to everyone she could think of, hoping someone had diapers to donate. No one did.
Rather than give up, Fadumo reached out to our supply team, who found a way to place an emergency order. Within days, diapers were in the family’s hands.
“This experience reminded me how essential diapers are for many of the families we serve,” Fadumo said. “Diapers are one of the most common and urgent needs we see, yet they can be difficult to access when families are already facing financial hardship.”
Stories like this are exactly why this drive exists: so that the next time a family runs out, we don’t have to scramble to find a way to help. We already have one.
One Family, Not Just One Child
At Neighborhood House, we take a systems integration approach: caring for a family as a whole, not just one child at a time, across the many programs and stages of life we support.
Many of the families in our home visiting and early learning programs have more than one child in diapers, and we’re not always able to help with all of them.
One mother recently visited a Neighborhood House location asking for extra diapers because her family needed more than what she was receiving through our services. She shared how stressful it is to keep enough diapers on hand for all of her children, not just the one enrolled in our program.

Diapers Free Up What Little There Is
A staff supervisor shared this reflection from her team:
“Receiving diapers helps families save money for other essential household needs. This is especially important for families without stable employment, who often struggle to afford an adequate supply of diapers for their children.
Families express their gratitude to us every day. Every diaper we provide is money a family gets to spend on rent, food, or transportation instead.
Growing at Their Own Pace
An estimated 30% of the children in our programs are navigating developmental delays or special needs, and for many of these families, diapers are needed longer than they are for other children.
In the past, our program received pull-ups donated by outside organizations to support children who were potty training. With diaper resources now limited, it has become much harder for families to work through potty training and get their children ready for preschool. This is especially true for children with special needs, who often need more time and more supplies to get there.
Supporting this need isn’t just about comfort. It’s about giving every child, including those with developmental delays, the time and resources they need to reach an important milestone.
A Family We’ve Grown With
One mother has been part of our home visiting program since 2020, raising three children with our support along the way. She moved to the U.S. from Ethiopia with her husband and a new baby, and found her way to us through a cousin who told her about Neighborhood House. She wanted to learn everything she could to give her children a strong foundation, and over six years she’s worked with three different home visitors, stayed connected to other families through community socializations, and watched her two older boys graduate out of our services altogether. They’re home for the summer now, and completely smitten with their baby sister.
Diapers have been part of this family’s story the whole way through. Both of her older boys received diapers through our program while they were enrolled, and now her youngest does too. As her family has grown and changed over six years, that support has been one steady thing she could count on.
