Message from Teacher Negyat

We have been getting children ready for their transition to Kindergarten. If you have a child going to kindergarten in the fall make sure to look out for information about the Jump Start program at Seattle Public Schools.

From the SPS website: For the 2021-22 school year, the transition to kindergarten for our youngest learners will kick off with Jump Start on August 17 and 18, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Please check with your student’s school for confirmation of dates and times.

During these two mornings, Jump Start schools will offer new kindergartners a gentle introduction to their new school building, staff, and peers.

Families at the 62 participating schools will be invited to pick up their district-provided iPads and/or hotspots, meet the principal, and engage with other families as they drop off and pick up their students.

MONDAY ACTIVITIES

Be Compassionate – Rain Boy Book

With your child, watch this video of Teacher Anna reading the book. The story is about differences, acceptance, and loving yourself for who you are. Wherever he goes, Rain Boy brings wet—which means he’s not very popular. Sun Kidd brings sunshine everywhere she goes, so everyone loves her. Only Sun Kidd sees what’s special about Rain Boy. After watching the video with your child ask them, “How do you think Rain Boy felt when all the children were teasing him?” and “If you were in the story what would you do to help Rain Boy feel supported?”

THURSDAY ACTIVITIES

Build An Outdoor Fort

With some rope, sheets, blankets and a little imagination you can create a huge fort that will fit all the kids! Just use structures already in your backyard as the main framework – fences, decks, railings, swing sets, etc.  Stretch and tie ropes and lay your blankets over them. (If you don’t have an outdoor space just create this indoors!)

FRIDAY ACTIVITIES

Number Match

It is important the kiddos are continuing to count and learn their numbers. This activity is easy and fun to do. Use white paper and draw the numbers 1– 10 on each paper or if you have long butcher paper, write out the numbers 1-10. On sticky notes, make corresponding sets for each number (you can do quantity or math problems) Ex: for number 5, you can draw 5 dots on the sticky notes. Have your child match the correct amount of dots or math problems on the sticky notes to the correct number.

ACTIVITIES FOR OUR YOUNGER CHILDREN

DIY Water table

Summer is almost here and it’s time for your kids to play outdoors enjoying fresh air and sunshine. To have a simple water table, you can easily grab clear plastic bins from your local store or even bins you have at home and fill them up with water. Don’t forget to add any water toys/toys so that your child can play with them in the water! Empty any water and refresh between uses.
