Math / Science

Egg carton planter: Cut an egg carton in half. Help your child add potting soil to individual egg cups in the carton. Have your child use their finger to create a hole in the center of each cup. Place one seed in each hole. Cover with soil. Spray soil with water. Place on the tray and keep them in a warm light-filled location indoors until they begin to sprout. Remind your child to water the seeds everyday. The soil should stay very moist. Once the seeds have sprouted into small seedlings, you and your child can transfer them to a permanent location. Watch the video below of me planting seeds with my children. The password was given to you in our Monday Home Learning email.

Identify plant parts you eat: Mealtime is an opportunity to think about the parts of plants you eat. Play a game with your child and have them guess if different vegetables come from the leaves, stems, flowers, roots or seeds of a plant. Think about how the vegetables look and what you know about different plant parts. What part of the plant do you think lettuce comes from? What about a carrot? What about celery? Have fun guessing and sharing your ideas!

Sorting: Cut out pictures of fruits and vegetables from grocery flyers or magazines. If you don’t have any you could draw fruits and vegetables. Then make a chart like the one below. Help your child sort fruits and vegetables into the correct column. This is an example of what it may look like when completed.
